San Roman Tower
The Torre de San Román is located near Santibañez de la Peña. They are the remains of an old Monastery that began its decline after the confiscation of Mendizabal. Its surroundings are a unique landscape full of freshness and water. Ideal for a small hiking route.
The municipality of Santibañez de la Peña is located in the western half of the Palentina Mountain.
It is made up of thirteen towns or districts, each of which contains a unique attraction. In the town of Santibañez de la Peña, entering its mountains, we find the remains of the Monastery of San Román de Entrepeñas from the 10th century. A tower is the only preserved vestige of this religious center, which had a great economic and social influence on the entire the Shire. Some experts have pointed out the existence in the tower of very ancient signs of Roman art.
Much has been written about the great importance and influence of this monastery over the centuries. Currently in private hands, it is in a state of ruin, preserving only one of the towers of the monastery and also having the handicap of not having any drawing, design or plan that could help in its rehabilitation since its structure and dimensions do not exist. they are known with certainty. Leaving from the La Estación neighborhood in Santibañez de la Peña, we must go to the primitive Santibañez town as its inhabitants call it, so that once located there, we can access the route that leads us to the refuge. A few hundred meters away and on a path between trees that gives off great freshness, we reach the stream that indicates the presence of the Torreón de San Román that we must locate covered by vegetation.

Moarves de Ojeda
To settle any possible discussion, the province of Palencia has the largest concentration of Romanesque churches in Europe. Moarves de Ojeda, a town that belongs to the municipality of Olmos de Ojeda and is located in the northern third of the province of Palencia, is also the area that has some of the oldest Romanesque temples and even the most striking and impressive. , like the church of San Juan Bautista.
But why is so much Romanesque concentrated here? Experts attribute it to poverty. When a place was economically prosperous or there was a nearby benefactor, the old parish, which had an already outdated style, was demolished or remodeled and the materials from these rural Romanesque constructions were used to build new, larger buildings dedicated to worship, following the architectural style prevailing at the time. Fortunately for us, many truly valuable temples have been preserved in this way. Specifically, the church of San Juan Bautista, from the 12th century but with late Gothic details, preserves Romanesque elements that leave any art lover speechless, starting with the sculptural frieze under a canopy on the south doorway, with a pantocrator in the center and the twelve apostles to the right and left, more abundant symbolic elements and continuing through the archivolts located below, formed by successive checkered borders, under the influence of the French Camino de Santiago, and very shameless columns in the capitals, brimming with the creativity of the master sculptors. Inside, a baptismal font from the 13th century stands out.
